How does the ecobutton work?

The ecobutton is an illuminating USB device that acts as a reminder and a prompt for the user to press the ecobutton at every opportunity whenever the computer is going to be left idle. This could be from taking a phone call or break, to doing paperwork or going to lunch and meetings where otherwise the computer would normally be left on. This is because people generally do not like turning off their computers because of the time it often takes to restart.

When the ecobutton™ is pressed it engages the computer into energy saving ‘ecomode’. This ensures that both the computer and monitor are set to operate in the most effi cient, lowest power mode available, which actually draws only the same nominal power as when the computer and monitor are turned off!

When you need to use the computer again, simply press any key to instantly return to where you left off!

Technical Details

• Will the eco button work on my computer ?
  • The eco button will only work on PC’s (A MAC version will be available later). Some older computers and some hp computers may have diffi culty in reactivation. This is a problem with the computer bios and not the software.

• Does the ecobutton also work the same on laptops?
  • Yes. However, you may need to reactivate by pressing the on switch first.

• What systems does it run on?
  • Windows 2000 / XP / Vista 32 bit

• How much space is required?
  • Less than 5Mb of disk space and a minimum of 256Kb RAM.

• Does it need an Administrator to run ?
  • Administrative rights will be required to install the software.

• What are Administrative rights?
  • If your computer is part of a network you may need to check with your IT department.

• I am not allowed to download software from the web.

• Will the ecobutton affect my internet connection?
  
  • All internet traffic will be suspended when the ecobutton is used although in most cases, it will simply continue from where the upload was left off when reconnection is made.

• Will the eco button affect my internet connection?
  • Uploads may be affected if interrupted by use of the ecobutton, but in most cases, it will simply continue when when reconnection is made.

• Will anybody else be able to access my computer when in ‘ecomode’?
  • No. No one can access the computer when it is in ecomode. For added security systems can be set to require a password on resume.

• How much will I save?
  • This is totally dependant on how your specific system is configured and the use to which it is put, but can be measured fairly accurately by using an energy meter.
